Have you wondered: Why do people wear odd-colored socks on World Down Syndrome Day? The answer is below. But first, a little background:
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), a global awareness day for Down Syndrome. This particular date - the 21st day of the 3rd month - was selected to signify the three copies of the 21st chromosome (trisomy 21) that causes Down syndrome.
Did you know? WDSD has been observed by the United Nations since 2012.
World Down Syndrome Day is a day to raise awareness about Down syndrome, to advocate for the rights of people with Down syndrome, and in general, has become a day to celebrate people with Down syndrome and the role they play in our lives and communities.
One of the fun traditions of WDSD is to wear crazy socks and post photos and videos of those socks on social media.
This year, don’t be left feeling sock envy -- plan ahead and get your crazy socks lined up so that you can show your support and participate in this fun tradition.
To help, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to crazy socks for World Down Syndrome Day:
Down Syndrome International creates and sells their own, official WDSD designs. Their website claims over 32,000 pairs sold in 2019... That’s a lot of socks!
You can purchase official WDSD socks at the WDSD Shop.
John’s Crazy Socks has several Down syndrome awareness designs, but our favorite is their “Down Syndrome Superhero Socks”. This fun design was created by John Cronin himself, a young man with Down syndrome and the co-founder of John’s Crazy Socks.
In general, John’s shop should be your go-to for crazy socks of any design.
Modsock.com sells some fantastic and fun designs. Who wouldn’t love a pair of Mister Rogers socks? Or perhaps celebrate your love of donuts, or your fascination with giant squid? Fun fact: the founder of ModSock, Urania, has a cat named Mister Rogers. ModSock has collections for men, women, and kids.
Stance Socks exists to “celebrate human originality”. Their sock designs will certainly bring some originality to your feet for WDSD. Plus, they have Star Wars themed socks! The H-Bomb is a huge Star Wars fan and couldn’t pass up a chance to highlight these awesome Chewie socks.
Last but not least, if you need to stay fancy, H-Bomb Ties offers select dress socks that match our fun tie patterns. One of The H-Bomb’s favorites is the T-Rex Pink Socks to go with his T-Rex Boy’s Bow Tie. A perfect WDSD combo.
Whatever sock vendor you chose, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating World Down Syndrome Day by rocking some awesome socks.
Stay fancy.
